Mr Benn

Mr Benn trying on costumes Mr Benn outside his house Mr Benn at the costume shop with the assistant

He lived at 52 Festive road in London, in a terraced house. He always wore a smart suit complete with bowler hat and umbrella. He would always set off to his local costume shop, where, as if by magic, the shopkeeper would appear and he would pick a costume, go into the changing room to try it on, and suddenly be whisked away into another world which depended on the costume which he had tried on.

After having an adventure he would return to the changing room, complete with souvenir.

The shopkeeper must have thought him to be a somewhat vain man to seemingly come into his shop all the time, and spend ages in front of the mirror.

This cartoon is well-remembered and well-liked, and what I liked most about it was the way that he walked - he could only have learnt to walk in such a stupid manner, in the army.

Mr Benn was made by David Mckee in 1970, and shown the following year. Each episode lasted only 15 minutes, and only 13 episode were ever made. Mr Benn's address, was based on 52 Festive road, Putney, London where the programme's creator lived.
