Willo the Wisp

Willo the Wisp, telling the story Willo the Wisp logo Mavis Cruet and Arthur

Made in 1981, and now available on video and DVD, this cartoon was entirely narrated and voiced by Kenneth Williams, the camp star of the Carry On films. The show focused on the characters who inhabited Doily Wood. The narrator was depicted as a blue, ghostly looking "wisp" of gas, and the show referred back to this creature every few moments as he would tell us more about the story. Main characters included: Mavis Cruet, a fat, sorry-looking fairy in a pink dress; Arthur, an orange caterpillar with a cynical wit; The Moog, a fat comical looking, stupid dog, who acted more like a pig; Carwash, a thin, short-sighted blue cat and Evil Edna, a witch in the form of an old television set, who used her aerials to strike evil into people, and often turned people into frogs. 26 episodes were made of Willo the Wisp, all of which are available on one DVD (a copy of which I am fortunate enough to possess). This show has not been repeated many times, but is remembered as a much-loved cartoon. Created by the late Nick Spargo, originally, rumour has it that a new version is to be made, written by his daughter. Watch this space.
